qatlh targhmo' bIpaS? = Why are you late because of a targ?
jImejpa' targh vIje'nISmo' jIpaS. = I'm late because I had to feed it before
I left.
lotmo' juHchaj luQaw'lu'. = Their homes were destroyed by the catastrophe.
juHchaj Qaw'pu' lot. = The catastrophe destroyed their homes.
bIQmo' yIQ ngeng. = The lake is wet because of water.
Heghmo' vavDaj jeSbe'. = She won't participate because her father died.
vavDaj Heghmo' jeSbe'. = She won't participate because of her father's
death.
vavDaj nolmo' jeSbe'. = She won't participate because of her father's
funeral.
vavDaj molmo' jeSbe'. = She won't participate because she buries her father.
Your analysis was fine: if an action is the cause, use -mo' on the verb. If
a thing is the cause, use -mo' on the noun. In many cases an almost
identical thought can be expressed both ways. In such cases feel free to
choose the one that is clearest or most beautiful.
