De'vID, you're right; I forgot about the {-pu'} plural for language-using  
entities. And I don't think they were scattered all about in my story, so  
that nuance doesn't apply.

Voragh, thanks for your suggestion to use {yan}; I didn't know that word  
before. :-D

Try the verb {yan} "wield, use or manipulate a sword".  E.g.

  vaj jIyantaHvIS Hoch vIHoHta' 
 
In KGT it was even used in a vegetable-related example (more or less):

  naH jajmeywIj betleH vIyanbe' 
  In my vegetable days, I did not wield a bat'leth. KGT
