Another way to answer that is to ask you for the difference between the English sentences "he is obviously lying" and "he is obviously behaving in the manner of a liar". And while there might be contexts in which one can wrong out a distinction, for the most part the second one is longer and less like something an English speaker would spontaneously say. Hence Marc chose the simpler one as the translation. 

Perhaps if the obviousness of the lie stems from his poor poker face I'd be more likely to say {nepwI' Daba'} and if he lied skillfully but I happened to know the vItna', I'd say {nepba'}.
