[Tlhingan-hol] Klingon Word of the Day: Sal

There's an additional use of the word in paq'batlh (paq'raD, Canto 22, Stanza 2 & 5):

QIStaq 'emDaq jenchoH jul
yor DungDaq Salta'DI'
tagh HarghchuqmeH poH

The sun rises high behind the Kri'stak,
When it rises over its top,
It is time to do battle.

Notice that both {Sal} and {jenchoH} are used to communicate similar ideas.

Also, the suffix -{ta'} in {Salta'DI'} is interesting. It could be an error, but it could also be a cultural oddity, or a piece of artistic license.

{Sal} would appear to behave similarly to {toS}:

raSDaq toS qeylIS
> Kahless climbs onto the table

tu’taHmeH chalqach toS
> He climbs a watch tower

‘Iw bIQtIqvo’
toS SuvwI’ yoH
puH QaDDaq paw
> The fearless warrior
> Climbs out of the blood
> Onto dry land.

AFAIK our one example of {Sal} in canon refers to mountains:

  SaqSub'e' muSHa'bogh
  pawmeH leng qeylIS
  HuDmey Sal ghIq ghIr

  And Kahless traveled to
  His beloved Saq'sub,
  Over the mountains [PB]

Cf. another example of {ghIr} "descend", also WRT {Hudmey}:

  HuDmeyvo' ghIr chaH
Over the hills, they came. [PB]

Related words:

pep raise (v)
toS climb (v)
jIm heave (aircraft) (v)

ghIr descend (v)
chagh drop (v)
pum fall (v)
Dej collapse (v)
