[Tlhingan-hol] Story: ghuv = The Recruit - 7

One week into my sending of this story, Torg is trying to figure out what
his assignment to <maQ> means, when someone hails him by name.

torgh tep lan. morghmeH poSchoHDI' torgh nuj, QI' chaw' much loD. mang ghaH
loD'e' 'ach pong, patlh joq ngu'be' chaw'. per yuD neH 'ang. <maQ> ghaH loD
tIn'e'. 
lupDujHom = shuttlecraft - better learn this one, it's going to come by a
few more times.
choghvat = airstairs, boarding stairs i.e. the steps leading to the door of
a ship
ba' = sit
"He is sitting on the shuttlecraft boarding stairs."
tlhe''eghDI' torgh, QamchoH loD 'ej DujDaq torgh tep lan.
tlhe' = turn
-'egh =V1 - oneself - tlhe''eghDI- = when torgh turns. If there is canon for
tlhe' I don't know it, but consistency is good, so I use tlhe''egh for
someone turning themselves and tlhe' for someone turning something else.
I'll take this as an opportunity to ask readers out if there is canon, or if
using tlhe'/tlhe'moH consistently would be as valid.
Qam = stand - you should know this one
-choH = V3 - change therefore QamchoH is "stands up" - changes to being
standing from doing something else. You could also QamchoH if you were
running, in which case it would be translated "come to a standstill" or if
you were doing acrobatics, it might be "vaulted to her feet".
loD = man - you should know this one, too
Duj = ship, vessel
tep = cargo - used for "baggage" on CK tape
lan = place (verb)
"When torgh turns, the man stands up and places Torg's baggage on the
vessel." 
morghmeH poSchoHDI' torgh nuj, QI' chaw' much loD.
morgh = protest (verb - but you know that because it has a V9 on it)
poS = be open
-choH - there it is again - poSchoHDI' = when [subject] changes to be open
nuj = mouth
QI' = military 
chaw' = permit. This word is used to denote documents, licences, tickets and
the like Huch chaw' = credit card; leng chaw' = passport; <QI' chaw'> is not
a canonical construct, but here it is intended to mean "military ID
document"
much = present/presentation but it has to be the verb here, or else the
clause is "The presentation man permits the military," which makes no sense.
loD = I told you to remember this one

"When Torg's mouth opens in order to protest, the man presents military ID."

mang ghaH loD'e' 'ach pong, patlh joq ngu'be' chaw'.
mang = soldier - remember this, and its plural, negh, too
ghaH = he/him - here acting as the verb to-be in the construction from TKD
6.3, so "is"
-'e' = N5 - the topic denoting suffix
mang ghaH loD'e' = "The man is a soldier." You are now responsible for
knowing this construction when it appears. Ask if you need more help with
it.
pong = name
patlh = rank
joq = and/or joining nouns 
ngu' = identify
chaw' = permit
If I say <pong patlh je ngu'be'> I might be implying that it didn't identify
both but it did identify one or the other, that for "SHOWS NAME AND RANK" to
be false, it could still show one or the other. If I said <pong patlh ghap
ngu'be'> I might be implying that it identified both OR neither, because
"SHOWS NAME OR RANK" is false if it shows both. So I've picked an option
that is false if either name or rank is shown, because neither is on the
document. Only programmers will understand that, but does anyone who can't
program learn Klingon? <pong patlh joq ngu'be> tells me it doesn't identify
both AND it doesn't identify either one.
"The man is a soldier but the permit does not identify his name or his
rank."
per yuD neH 'ang.
per = label
yuD = be dishonest - be verb after a noun, means the verb is acting as an
adjective - remember this - per yuD happens to be an idiom meaning "code
name"
neH = adverb - "only" -  it can't be "want" because the next word is not a
subject for neH.
'ang = reveal, show
"It reveals only a code name."
<maQ> ghaH loD tIn'e'.
And if I tell you 
tIn = be big
You can see why the sentence means:
"The big man is "maQ". (Or "The big man is "Sign" depending on whether or
not you want to translate code names).
One thing that keeps bugging me about this is that I initially identify maQ
as solid and only here as big. I suppose everyone is big if you are Torg,
but I should call him big earlier. Except I don't want to go back and do a
<Subbogh loD tIn> or <tInbogh loD Sub> thing. You can't pile two stative
verbs on one noun, so you have to do it that way.
