I ran into exactly this problem in translating The Man in the Panther Skin, and rendered it with {jupoywI'} "my beloved friend".

I don't see why they wouldn't. English does things very similarly to Klingon: a man's "buddy" or "mate" is almost always a man, and conversely a woman's "girlfriend" (when she's not using that term to refer to her romantic partner) is always a woman. That doesn't put restrictions on what kinds of friendships one is able to have, or with whom.
