What does it mean to "be excellent to" someone? Does it denote
respect? Charity? Pride in workmanship? It's a vague phrase that
doesn't mean anything clear to me.

If you just want to translate the words, {tlhIHvaD pepov} probably
comes close. {...pepov'eghmoH} is more proper grammar even if it
sounds a little less concise. {ngIq tlhIHvaD...} might even work for
the "to each other" idea, though I'm not sure how well pronouns fit in
that sort of construction.
