I wonder if {DIj} "use a pigment stick" and {DIj} "slide sword blade 
along opponent's blade" aren't really the same verb, applied to two 
different contexts?  Maybe they're just two instances of a more generic 
meaning of "slide a stick-like object along another object so as to 
cause friction", or something like that.

Or it could be another case of homophony.

Right.  But here we're talking about painting; applying pigment to a 
(presumably) flat surface.  The /Book of Kells/ was painted, not carved.
