You are correct that this is a typographical error. As far as the double S
goes, pronunciation of doubled letters varies from pair to pair (and likely
speaker to speaker, to some extent). When I say leSSov the S is
significantly longer than it would be if I pronounced a word spelled
leSov. I think that is likely pretty regular across speakers, but it might
be more varied if one looked at a word like lettaH, because I would tend to
pause in the middle of the t sound, whereas some speakers might actually
pronounce separate t sounds.
