For those of you interested, there is an article about the Dwingeloo
Radio Observatory in the January issue of 'Sky and Telescope' magazine.
This radio telescope, the only large radio telescope in the world run by
amateur astronomers (and ham radio operators), is famous in the Klingon
world. This radio telescope is also set up to transmit, and was used
recently by Marc Okrand to transmit a message to the supposed Klingon
home star system Arcturus. This was an invitation to the Klingon Empire
for any interested parties to attend the Klingon opera 'U'. There is a
video of Marc sending this message on the extras section of a
documentary about the production of 'U'. The transmitter used, a Kenwood
TS-2000X is clearly visible in one of the pictures in the article (The
transmission was in the Amateur Radio 1.2 GHz band).

There is no mention of this important transmission in the article. But I
wish we had a facility like that here in the 'States!
