AFAIK never used by Okrand, but is was used by the KLI for an issue of a magazine or journal; e.g.

  jarvam chovnatlh
current issue (i.e. of Qo'noS QonoS) KLI

  wen chovnatlh
past issues (i.e. of Qo'noS QonoS) KLI

Apparently derived from the verb {chov} "assess, evaluate, test":

  luchovmeH 'oy'naQmey lo'
[Warriors] who test him with painstiks. S9

tlhIngan wo' yuQmey chovlu'chugh Qo'noS potlh law' Hoch potlh puS.
The principal planet of the Klingon Empire, Qo'noS... S27

Trek trivia:

"I've never encountered a specimen like you before." (Lt. Carolyn Palomis to Apollo, "Who Mourns for Adonais?")

Alpha 177 was the site of a geological survey mission; a landing party beamed down on a specimen gathering expedition. (TOS "The Enemy Within")

The alien Tan Ru probe's mission was to gather and sterilize soil samples as a prelude to colonization. (TOS "The Changeling")
