[217] I keep accidentally writing my way into scenes from my own 
life. I used to serve in a coastal cliff rescue squad, and I'm 
delighting in having these young soldiers unself-consciously saying 
everything that we were strictly disciplined not to say, lest media 
or families overhear and mistake realism for callous uncaring. It's a 
taste of Essim's own medicine as she keeps upsetting Mahoun by saying 
it like it is.

I am not totally satisfied that I have depicted the river and the 
waterfall here the way I see it in my mind, but I think that the 
picture you get will still tell the story. Let me know if there is 
any confusion.
