Mahoun's bridge officer had just hung up on Essim, but at least her
week-long headache had subsided.

SKI: Mahoun accepts Essim's replacement proverb, but tells her they
can't have a relationship because she's too dangerous.
----
I've been possessed with a desire to translate this into English
today, so I will. Feel free to comment on my translation skills as
well as my Klingon ones.

While Essim was enjoying the cessation of pain, Mahoun called her. As
he was using only a voice communicator she couldn't see his face, but
he was clearly angry. He said, "What do you want? If I have offended
you, I alone am responsible and you speak to me. It was
unintentional, but if your customs call on you to hate me, then go
ahead! My crewmembers haven't insulted you. Don't scare and threaten
them. If you don't bother us again, we won't bother you again. Do you
understand me?"

Essim said, "You dare threaten me when you're afraid to show your face?"

Mahoun said, "Don't accuse me. I'm on the cargo deck so there's no
visual display here. I'm not threatening you. I'm scolding you. If
you have to see my face before you will respect my crew then I'll
show it to you. I'm on my way to my room."

Essim could hear Mahoun breathe as he hurried. His angry face
appeared on the visual display. Essim granted the weakling some
respect because he could be fierce to defend his crew. Suddenly
Mahoun's face changed. He said, "My god! Essim! What's with your eye?"

'eSSIm was confused. She said, "What?" When she adjusted the
viewscreen to see herself she saw the problem. Her left eye was
bright red. On her cheek and below her eyebrow there was blood and
mucus. Her eye appeared to have exploded, but she could see
perfectly. As she'd had such a headache when it happened she hadn't
noticed. It was most unusual. It freaked Essim out, but as she wasn't
going to admit that to an alien she said, "I see it. It's not a
problem. It's nothing." Mahoun seemed to believe her.

Mahoun said, "When my navigator said, 'Her eye propelled blood' she
wasn't exaggerating. You terrified her. Why did you threaten an
attack on us by the Klingon fleet?" Mahoun was serious but now calm.

Essim said, "I didn't threaten you guys. I called to speak to you. I
think she's just afraid of Klingons."

Mahoun picked up a scrap of paper. He said, "I will read your own
message: <Soon fierce soldiers will do battle with you>. It scares
*me*. If you're not threatening us then ... are you warning us?"
Mahoun became very serious.

Essim though. Suddenly she realized the situation. She said,
"Mistranslation! I said 'A great warrior is always ready to fight.'
It's a replacement proverb. Do you understand that concept, my love?"
She so hoped Mahoun could understand.

Mahoun's ferocity waned. He said, "Yes. I understand the replacement
proverb." He seemed tired and sad. Essim couldn't judge if he had
accepted the replacement proverb. Mahoun went on, "Essim, I don't
doubt your Klingon honour, but ... you scared the piss out of me. Now
when I dream I'm again surrounded by evil Klingons." Now that he
seemed to brag about his weakness Essim was confused. Alien ways are
frustrating! Mahoun said, "You're beautiful. You excite me and
inspire me but you tried to fucking kill me. Maybe Klingons kill each
other and forget about it, but in my society a simple proverb isn't
enough. We are utterly different. I can't enjoy a situation where I
always have to understand and abide by your customs. My officers are
right. You are too dangerous. We can't be together. It's not possible
for us to lov-" Mahoun interrupted himself and his voice changed
completely. "We're in an emergency," he said, and cut off the transmission.
