I was going to say that {vem} has only been used literally, not metaphorically, but then I remembered this proverb:

  bIQongtaHvIS nItlhejchugh targhmey bIvemDI' nItlhej ghIlab ghewmey 
  If you sleep with targs, you'll wake up with glob flies.  TKW

... which, as it happens, is its only appearance in canon.
